The Future You Want

Sep 19
2 min read

Just a question, somewhere between the scrolling.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦?

And what are you doing today to get there?

We often have a picture in our heads.

A bigger car.

A beautiful trip.

The next career move.

A home of our own.

Early retirement.

A child.

But does your desired future end there?

With whatever is visible, measurable, or socially expected?

Or is that mostly the 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 you believe will bring you something else?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥.

Ask yourself this question:

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦, 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵?

Not superficially, but really.

What do you hope to feel? To experience? To become?

Is it really about the car?

Or is it about recognition for all your hard work, status, being seen?

Or perhaps freedom — maybe that car is a camper van. Maybe you want to escape, to live with fewer ties and less certainty.

Is it really about that beautiful destination?

Or perhaps about the likes on Instagram confirming that you’ve “got it all figured out”?

Is it about escaping your busy life, stepping away from responsibilities, creating some breathing room?

Or do you actually just want time.

Time for yourself.

Or for your favourite person.

Me at the Tower of Pisa.
Me at the tower of Pisa. Finally I can stripe this one of my list. My list of what, actually..?

A career move may bring you more money, influence, status.

Or perhaps what you really long for is growth, purpose, recognition — the feeling that what you do matters.

Working hard now for an early retirement.

Is that really a desire to no longer have to?

To stop needing more.

To stop chasing more.

To have time for yourself.

For volunteering, creativity, meaning.

A child.

Is it about “doing what everyone else does”?

About not wanting to be alone?

Or is it a deep longing for connection, love, for having someone to care for unconditionally?

And if so, are you also willing to let go of some of the other things you once wanted for your future?

What is the future you want?

Newsflash:

No material goal can permanently fulfill something that exists on another level.

A trip doesn’t create lasting peace.

More money doesn’t create true fulfillment.

And a new chapter won’t resolve an inner emptiness.

So the question isn’t only 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 you want,

but 𝘸𝘩𝘺 you want it.

Do you still have your deepest desire in sight?

Or are you focusing too much on the means,

because they feel concrete and give you something to hold on to?

Perhaps your desired future doesn’t begin later.

Perhaps it begins with looking honestly.

Today.
